research and planning
  • prezi = mainly for our research on our target audience. we found prezi average in terms of use as sometimes it would glitch or crash but altogether we found the end product to be satisfying as it presented our ideas in a unique, interesting and engaging way instead of a normal powerpoint with dull slides.
  • slideshare - we used slideshare when we wanted to upload our moodboards which were created on powerpoint. this was extremely simple to use and there were no problems with it at all.
  • vimeo - this wasn’t a programme, this was a website where we could find HD videos. we found this really beneficial in terms of shots and helped us with our ideas for slow motion and speeding up our film.
  • Youtube - youtube was the best website that we used for our research and planning as we found videos quickly and easily. we were influenced by our videos heavily and almost all of them came from youtube. we could embed them and take screen shots effectively to help us also.

three influences
  • project x
  • skins
  • visuals from the tracks that we watched on youtube

project x

  • titles were our main focus why? - because they were clear, bold and didn’t stick to a specific genre. they were universal in the font. also they were the most interesting in terms of wording when we looked at other titles, we wanted to avoid it being cheesy/not related to our film at all. we also wanted a variety- to “invite” our audience to watch our film. one of the main things that we liked about their titles was the twitter hashtag at the end which said project x. it just gave the film that little bit more and really involved their audience without the film being totally spoiled, we wanted this effect too, it also looked cool when we edited it in and was easy enough to do.
  • handheld - we liked their handheld shots in particular as they made the viewing experience more interesting, realistic and edgy. we also liked how their handheld shots didn’t look tacky, they looked as professional as they could. we also copied the “REC” button as you can see here. (split screen) we thought that just added the extra edge it needed and to also reiterate to our audience that it was a recording camera and not a “dodgy” handheld shot.
  • atmosphere. - we wanted to create a fun, yet scary (in our case) atmosphere for our audience which we thought project x captured extremely well (insert clips)
  • audience intentions - we really liked project x’s themes and the way they really focused on their target audience, which was the same for ours.
  • editing - we really liked the way that project x used short cuts (insert clip) in their trailer as it added to the edgy feel of the film, it also built up tension and excitement which is what we wanted to achieve with ours, as you can see (compare both clips) we followed a similar formula in terms of editing as we used project x as a skeleton for our own trailer.

- on the other hand we did have many differences from project x. we originally wanted to film it in a dark setting possibly nighttime like project x, but on filming the car breaking down (insert clip) we just realised it wasn’t possible and we didnt have the right equipment. that was probably our biggest down fall and difference from project x and taught us that we shouldn’t go too out of our depth and also saved us from almost copying the lighting that project x used in theirs. we also toned down on the party aspect as project x’s was just images of the party. we wanted to show a journey in our trailer and when we filmed the party/drug like scenes we just found that it didn’t have the same effect due to the amount of people that we had and also again it was the equipment. our last major difference from project x that we’re probably the most proud of is our music choice. as ours was a different genre from project x’s we decided to have an eerie/mellow track as when we tried to include an upbeat track (insert clip) it didn’t work at all and turned our horror into more of a comedy/drama. yet again this was a downfall for some time as we couldn’t find the perfect track, but as we were searching for more camera ideas we came across this viedo (underwater one) and the track was perfect. this didn’t stop us later on from using a more upbeat track but we had the oppurtunity to show a journey rather than using one track the whole way through, making it appear like a music video.

Finally uploaded...the process of making our magazine cover.

In total this took us around 3 days to do as we had to cut the design, gloss it, wait for it to dry, soak it, print the design and leave the design for 24 hours to dry. But altogether, it was worth it as we had an original magazine poster.
